The City of Waterloo is the smallest of the three cities in the Region of Waterloo.

Fondly Known as “Twin Cities” when referencing its neighbour Kitchener or “Tri-Cities” when including the City of Cambridge, the region has recently realized unprecedented growth economically and in recent migration. The History of Waterloo

Waterloo traces its roots back to the early 1800’s. In 1816 the new township was named after Waterloo, Belgium, the site of the Battle of Waterloo (1815), which had ended the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. After that war, the new township became a popular destination for German immigrants. By the 1840s, German settlers had overtaken the Mennonites as the dominant segment of the population. Many Germans settled in the small hamlet to the southeast of Waterloo. In their honour, the village was named Berlin in 1833 (renamed to Kitchener in 1916).

Waterloo shares a regional airport that offers national and international flights, a transit hub that offers 4 daily commuter GO trains into union station Toronto, a rapidly expanding local and regional highway corridor to support its growth and accessibility and soon to be launched local light rail transit (LRT) line which will make travel within “KW” extremely convenient and less dependable on cars.
